That includes field sensors, smart meters, reliable communications, accurate network and asset data, advanced control systems, distributed-resource management, common interoperability standards, cybersecurity, skilled operators and regulation that rewards measurable reliability, capacity and customer benefits. Peninsular, Sabah and Sarawak networks need roadmaps suited to their different starting points.
Digitalisation can increase the usable capacity and flexibility of physical grid assets, but fragmented systems can add cost without improving operations. A clear architecture and governance model helps utilities integrate renewables and new demand while protecting critical infrastructure and consumer data.
Utilities need sensors, intelligent electronic devices, smart meters, weather data and asset-condition monitoring at the locations where information changes planning or operating decisions. Instrumenting everything is unnecessary; coverage should reflect network risk and value.
Fibre, wireless and other resilient channels must carry data with the latency and reliability required for each function. Common equipment identifiers, network models, time standards and interfaces reduce the cost of connecting utility and third-party systems.
SCADA, outage management, Advanced Distribution Management Systems, energy management systems and Distributed Energy Resources Management Systems need accurate models and defined operating procedures. TNB states that its ADMS integrates smart-meter information, field operations and DER monitoring.
More connected devices create more attack paths. Identity and access control, segmentation, secure procurement, patching, monitoring, backup, incident response and recovery must cover both information technology and operational technology.
Technical capability has limited value if batteries, generators and flexible loads cannot offer services or receive clear signals. Connection rules, data access, tariffs, aggregation and performance measurement must evolve with the systems.
Utilities and regulators need power-system, data, telecommunications and cybersecurity skills. Digital twins and analytics must be validated against field conditions, with operators retaining clear authority and safe fallbacks.
